- Refugee Outreach
Pamela Bożek is an interdisciplinary artist who promotes participatory practices. She is interested in the mechanisms of exclusion and stigmatization. In her projects, she addresses issues related to the loss, lack and redistribution of goods. She cooperates with non-governmental organizations dealing with migrant women’s rights in Poland. “Polish-Chechen and Chechen-Polish mini-phrasebook” is an artistic participatory project initiated by the artist in cooperation with refugees from Chechnya living in the Centre for Foreigners in Grupa, a village located about 60 km from Bydgoszcz, and with the help of Bydgoszcz residents, as well as with the translator and activist Khedi Alieva. The book was launched in the summer of 2019, in gallery BWA Bydgoszcz. Please read more by following the link.
Ms. Bożek was the initiator and facilitator of a bookbinding micro-brand “Notesy z Łukowa” (Block notes from Lukow). It is a project based on participation and it supports refugees staying at the Centre for Foreigners in Łuków. She is also the initiator of the Waza-vis magazine written by and immigrants in Poland, edited by the Museum of Contemporary art from Warsaw. Please find more here.
In the book edition of the Polish-Chechen and Chechen-Polish Mini-phrasebook, the artist adapts the idea of conversations (in languages other than Chechen), initiated by Alina Wójcik, a native of Bydgoszcz, to the current reality, and adds new chapters (Generational Care and Women’s Rights). The mini-phrasebook is like a sculpture. A bustling beehive of words interacting with each other like cells or atoms. Words stay together with a bit of well-prepared space to create a translucent sculpture between them.
By the courtesy of the artist and of BWA Bydgoszcz, the ASW 9th grade students printed and bound copies of the “Polish-Chechen and Chechen-Polish mini-phrasebook”. Over 35 copies made by the ASW students were donated to the refugee centres near Warsaw. These books will benefit both the residents as well as the personnel of these Institutions.
