Juggling for Refugees

On December 8th, for the first time ever, the ASW Reaching Out Club hosted refugee children from two Refugee Centres, Linin and Dębak.

Students started setting up the designated spaces at 9:00 a.m., and shortly after, they greeted their guests and their supervisors from the Refugee Centres. There were 80 guests altogether!

The guests were invited to the theatre to meet the ‘famous juggler’ Mr. Chris Taylor (HS English teacher) and a balloon artist TJ Merritt (HS Social Studies and Theory of Knowledge). Their wonderful collaborative performance together with invited guest-artists from the audience, was followed by a drama workshop conducted by Mr. David Stein and Mr. Teo Ajder.

After perfecting their performance skills, all the guests were invited to enjoy popcorn courtesy of Mrs. Lada Martinez and the MS Student Council. After the popcorn was served the guests took part in various cooking, sports, crafts and table games activities.

A big thank you to Polina for the Russian blini (pancakes), JeongBin and Dohyun for cotton candy, and to the PTO for providing juices at lunch!

The refugee children were very excited to receive Holiday gifts prepared by Bridgit, Giorgia, Ola and Erin. Both centers received a few boxes of books, board games, soccer and volleyballs.

We would like to thank everybody who was involved in this wonderful event. To Tomek and Zosia, the leaders of the Reaching Out Club for working on putting the nuts and bolts of the event together and running the preparation sessions under the supervision of Mr. Alan James and Ms. Suzanne Doering, and to all three of them for keeping a sharp eye on the whole event.

In addition to the people mentioned above, we would like to mention and acknowledge Lily, Nicole and Juliane for baking and decorating cookies, for the hot chocolate & marshmallows;

Arnel, Gabe, Gugu, Emre, Michal, Denny for running the volleyball, football and ping-pong games; Bridgit, Maja, Sydney and Ola for overseeing and playing various board games with our guests; Taylor, Amelie, Jiji, Giorgia, Erin for face painting, and for running workshops on making and decorating snowflakes and painting Christmas decorations.

We would like also to thank the guests for willing to join the event and especially the girls dance band who interpreted a modern dance for their hosts.
