Position: One-to-One Learning Assistant 

Division: Learning Support 

Contract: full-time, fixed term per School Year (Aug-Jun)

 

Position overview:

The position involves supporting a student with intensive learning needs in a One-to-One model, in order to help the student be successful in the school environment. The One-to-One Assistant will provide Pedagogical support for the student in grade-level and learning support classes, under the guidance and supervision of the Learning Support Staff. He/she will be the primary support for the student by providing one-to-one assistance during the school day to access the curriculum, complete course/classroom activities, work and assignments, monitor and maintain appropriate behavior. The One-to-One Learning Assistant will use resources, routines and procedures to provide a respectful, positive, safe, and student-centered environment that is conducive to learning. Training opportunities will be provided.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • helping student to attend to tasks, and maintain focus in order to finish work; clarifying, explaining and breaking down tasks;

  • assisting in all curricular and non-curricular areas taking into consideration the student’s learning profile;

  • assisting in the management and development of the student’s social and emotional interactions;

  • using appropriate methods to promote/reinforce the student’s self-esteem and meta-cognitive awareness; 

  • assisting the student’s Teachers with arranging the classroom and materials to maximize learning ensuring student safety during the school day;

  • monitoring and documenting student performance;

  • providing feedback regarding the student’s progress to the Learning Support Team, classroom/subject teacher.

 

Qualifications Required:

  • BA degree, education/pedagogy studies preferred;

  • strong communication skills in English, including reading and writing;

  • experience working in an educational setting or with children preferred;

  • experience with or training in supporting students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities preferred;

  • strong interpersonal skills, ability to work well with both adults and children;

  • ability to use job related technology and software applications;

  • ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others as part of a team; 

  • good organizational skills and the ability to multitask;

  • patience and passion for teaching.


 

The posting is an open, standing position which will be filled as needed. In the event that the student leaves and/or at the end of the fixed term contract, internal candidates would return to a comparable position without loss of seniority.
